National Team

National President

Felix Hughes

Heya! I'm Felix, your 2026 National President.

I'm a Monash University student studying International Relations, and last year I served as the 2025 Monash Student Association Secretary.

2026 is going to be a big year for student unionism. Student unions are under sustained attack, from efforts to undermine our independence and funding to attacks on freedom of speech. These aren't abstract, they directly impact students' access to representation, support, and community on campus.

At the same time, students are doing it incredibly tough. The cost-of-living crisis is forcing too many into impossible choices between rent, food, transport, and study, while government support continues to fall well short.

Universities should be places of open debate and critical thinking, but too often students and staff are being constrained in how they speak, organise, and participate.

Our vision for 2026 is a higher education system that actually works for students.

The NUS is your union. If something is happening on your campus, whether it's defending your organisation, protecting student rights, or responding to policy changes, we're here to support you.

My door is always open, and I'm looking forward to working with you all throughout 2026.

General Secretary

Akash Nagarajan

My name is Akash, and I am a 4th-year law/arts student at the lovely UNSW. I’ve been involved in student unionism since I started university, and I intend to use my knowledge and experience as General Secretary at UNSW and in the union movement to kick off a year of strong advocacy for students across Australia through this union.

Over the past few years, we have consistently seen that universities have become degree factories where people get their degree and go. But universities can be more than just that; they are places where friendships are made and where ideas of the world are created and challenged. Education is a crucial tool for social mobility, and universities play a crucial role in the development of young people in Australia. The NUS’s goal is to ensure higher-quality education for all students studying here.

Fragmentation is the enemy of students. When student voices are divided, we cannot win. Consolidation and unity are the keys to our strength; this union makes us strong. Thus, accreditation to the NUS is imperative to ensure the success of our advocacy, and will be a key focus of mine this year.

My job is to ensure the day-to-day operations of this union, and I look forward to bringing strong fiscal responsibility and administration to the NUS. I am excited to work with both my fellow Office Bearers and student representatives from across Australia to bring positive and lasting change for students in the tertiary education sector.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch through my email below, and if you happen to see me or any other members of the NUS team, come say hello!
